But Messi, 30, admits he would be delighted if there was a chance the Catalans could re-sign him.

He told Mundo Deportivo: "Obviously, if it were possible, I would love Neymar to return.

"He is an exceptional player and having him with us once again would be fantastic. To be honest, I find it difficult to imagine it this happening. But, it were up to me, it would be great."

Neymar, 26, is tipped to make a sensational move to their eternal rivals and, asked about that possibility, he admitted: "The truth is, I really wouldn't like it if he went to Real Madrid."

Messi enjoyed a stunning rapport with the Brazilian in the four years they played together at the Nou Camp.

After a trophyless first season, the pair won the Treble in 2014-15, forming one of the game's great strikeforces alongside Luis Suarez.

In the following campaign, they lost their stranglehold on the Champions League, but retained their La Liga title and the Copa del Rey.

And, after losing the title to Real Madrid in 2017, Neymar left for PSG.
