Co-pilot Rik Vanlessen has died aged 52 after sixth round Condroz Rally crash

STEVE MATTERNE'S co-pilot Rik Vanlessen has died aged 52 after crashing in the sixth stage of the Condroz Ralley.

The Belgian was competing in his tenth rally this afternoon when their Skoda Fabia R5 steered off course and hit an electricity pole at around 2pm.

Matterne was turning the corner and lost control of the car at full speed before hitting an electricity poll.

Despite the quick intervention of the medical service the pilot did not survive the crash after numerous attempts to resuscitate him.

Matterne sustained an injury to his neck and was transferred to the hospital, but there is no danger to his life.

Race organisers have said the accident will not impact the process of the race and therefore the event is likely to continue today and tomorrow.

A statement by the event read: "We offer our condolences to the drivers family and friends."

This is the first accident in the BK rally since the Bocholt ralley n 2012.
