England and Wasps star Nathan Hughes has RFU disciplinary hearing postponed in bizarre circumstances

NATHAN HUGHES has been left sweating on a potential ban after a bizarre hearing with the RFU.

The Wasps and England No.8 was supposed to be in front of a disciplinary panel on Wednesday night – but shady rugby bosses postponed his hearing at 11.21pm with little explanation.

That news came hours after Hughes tweeted, and then deleted: "What a joke."

Twickenham chiefs refused to comment on what the hold-up was and it has caused huge chaos for Wasps, who start their Champions Cup campaign away at Leinster on Friday night.

Wasps and England rugby union no.8 Nathan Hughes could be in trouble for supposedly punching Gloucester's Lewis Ludlow in the head

Hughes' Wasps teammate Lima Sopoaga also piled in on Twitter using the hashtag "FreeNathanHughes."

The RFU said: "This case will reconvene in not less than seven days in order to deal with an issue that arose during the evening."

Hughes allegedly clocked Gloucester's Lewis Ludlow in the head and is waiting to see if he will be available to play in the Autumn internationals or not.

Because he stands accused of whacking another player in the head – the punishment, if found guilty, carries a minimum six weeks out.

England's first game against South Africa is on November 3 with the All Blacks, Australia and Japan all to follow.

With bulldozer Billy Vunipola back fit, Hughes would most likely have been his back-up off the bench at Twickenham.

But boss Eddie Jones could look pretty lightweight in second string no.8s as Sam Simmonds is out for the season and Bath rookie Zach Mercer is the next cab off the rank.

Just 12 months ago Hughes was slapped with a two-week ban for striking, so he doesn't even have a squeaky clean record in his favour.

The Fiji-born star has 17 appearances for England and has scored one try.

Hughes signed for current side Wasps and has made over 100 appearances for the club since joining from Auckland in 2013.
