England drop record-breaking full-back Mike Brown for their autumn opener against South Africa at Twickenham

MIKE BROWN has been dropped by England for their autumn opener against South Africa.

The Red Rose's most-capped full-back is one of 10 players sent back to their clubs – including South African born Michael Rhodes and Sam Underhill.

Brown, 33, played on the wing in all three Tests against the Springboks this summer.

But this is the first time the 72-capped star he has been dropped completely by boss Eddie Jones when fully fit and opens the door for Chris Ashton to play his first Test since 2014.

South African Rhodes has also been denied a dream England debut against the Springboks after being cut from the Red Rose training squad.

The 31-year-old Saracens flanker missed a crucial training session in Vilamoura this morning.

And alongside Sarries teammates Richard Wigglesworth and Alex Lozowski he will return home as the rest of the 25-man squad, plus Courtney Lawes who stays on for back rehab, stay on the continent until Thursday.

England no.2 Steve Borthwick said: "Maro, Michael Rhodes and Courtney didn't train today – Maro and Rhodes were rested for this morning. Maro will be fine to train this afternoon.

"But Michael Rhodes has not been selected so is returning home. It is purely selection. In that back five we have got a lot of really good players. I think Michael is an excellent player and has showed that.

"He’s a very versatile player with his ability to play in the second-row, and I think back to players that I’ve played with, one that comes to mind is Martin Corry, he's a bit like him with that versatility – he's a tough and hard working player.

"Players love playing with him and players who play against him know they’ve played against him, that’s the type of player his is, a good player and adds to our depth and competition for places in the squad."
