F1 legend Niki Lauda undergoes lung transplant after being rushed to hospital following smoke inhalation damage from 1976 crash

NIKI LAUDA has been released from hospital after a lung transplant.

The 69-year-old was rushed to the Vienna General Hospital two moths ago in a condition labelled as extremely critical.

Lauda, who is also non-executive chairman at Lewis Hamilton Mercedes F1 team, suffered horrific injuries 42 years ago when he crashed at the Nurburgring.

The three-time F1 champion was trapped in his burning Ferrari and suffered serious skin burns and smoke inhalation, which damaged his lungs.

Meanwhile, Hamilton, who can win the F1 title this weekend in Mexico City, says he has spoken to Lauda on the phone and will be visiting him soon.

He said: "I was shocked to hear from him. I told him 'you sound younger than ever'.

"He is determined to come back and he is grateful to the doctors for all their good work and to his wife.

"For sure, I'll be in Vienna to visit him before the end of the season.

"We miss him here in the team, but we have his spirit with us at the races."
