Other teams were also targeted by thieves as they left the track in Sao Paulo while two members of the FIA, the sport's governing body, were also involved in a dangerous attack on their car.

However, meetings have been taking place at the FIA's HQ in Paris to improve the armed police presence on the route to the track.

SunSport understands that officers will now line the main route into the circuit to prevent similar attacks from the neighbouring favelas.

Last year, Hamilton called on F1 bosses, the FIA and organisers to do more to ensure the safety of those attending and working at the GP.

He said: "I was horrified to hear what had happened. The frustrating thing is I have been in Formula One for 10 years and every year that has happened to someone in the paddock.

"It's for the people at the top to take action to keep everyone safe. It's no good just the bosses or myself having security; everyone needs to be looked after."
