Manchester United players rated and slated: Pogba a passenger on Turin return but thank goodness for Mata

MANCHESTER UNITED pulled off a stunning comeback in what could be a real turning point in their season.

Cristiano Ronaldo's stunning volley on 65 minutes looked like it was going to be enough to seal the victory for Juventus in Turin.

But Juan Mata curled home a pearler of a free-kick after climbing off the bench to stun the Allianz Stadium.

And things were about to get even better. Panic in the Juve box saw Pogba ping a header at goal that deflected off Leonardo Bonucci and in.

Here SunSport rates and slates the Red Devils after they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Called into action for his first real save just past the half-hour mark, superbly parrying out Juan Cuadrado's effort that deflected off Matic.

Another couple of smart saves in the opening stages of the second half were quickly forgotten when he was left watching Ronaldo's effort sail over his head.

Perhaps criticising him for not pinging the ball into the box more often is a little unfair with the physical presence of Romelu Lukaku missing.

But crosses can still create panic and confusion, so it's surely worth a try SOMETIMES regardless – as proved when his cross led to the winner.

He came under great pressure in the second period, but never gave up the chase, whether going forward or scuttling back.

Fairly quiet opening 45, will have been relieved that when the ball did evade him, Juve were wasteful in front of goal.

In the second half he came under pressure a lot more, and while aerially he managed to get good distance on the ball, when Juve played to feet, Smalling was troubled.

Confident opening from the Swede, who seemed as comfortable putting his head to things in the middle as he did to pulling out wide to clear.

But he was caught flat-footed from Leonardo Bonucci's delicious ball to Ronaldo for his thundering opener.

Confident first half from the England man, and he was well supported in defence as Martial tracked back which will have delighted Mourinho.

A much more subdued second half, perhaps expected as Juve turned the screw.

But his positioning looks to have improved massively, and he is pressing his claims to be Gareth Southgate's first pick for the left-back spot for England.

Was always likely to get the nod for the trip to Italy, due to his snappy play in the middle of the park.

He certainly put in a shift, but the little Spaniard was limited to how far his adventure went out there, and was hooked off in the second half.

Booked after just 11 minutes, the Serb was running a tightrope that his manager clearly didn't need for the man shielding the centre-halves.

But he kept his discipline superbly despite Juventus' free-flowing attacks from the off. Contender for man of the match.

Wasteful in possession in the first half, and looked at times to be sauntering back to help out in defence.

Not much changed in the second period, with the flamboyant Frenchman all-too often trying to make things more complicated than they needed to be.

He was in the right place at the right time as United won it at the death, but his boss will expect Pogba to do MUCH more in the big games.

Juventus started strongly with United looking to rely on the counter, and when they did Lingard looked the most likely to find that killer pass in the first 45.

But the England star visibly tired as the game wore on, and he became marginalised out wide.

It was no surprise that he was replaced by Marcus Rashford shortly after United went 1-0 down.

After nothing in 25 or so minutes, Sanchez started coming into it as United started to sense Juve were a bit nervous in their role as favourites.

But despite his endeavour, he seemed to want to drop deep as oppose to lead the line, which meant Bonucci and Chiellini were largely untroubled.

Subbed off for Marouane Fellaini on 79 minutes – with the Belgian arguably having more of an impact.

Frenchman, deployed on the flank for this game in Turin, was playing more like a wing-back for the first 30 minutes.

Aside from once worthy of mention when he cut in nicely and flashed a shot only just wide, it was a performance that failed to deliver on pre-match promise.

The only surprise was that Mourinho kept him on – but that could prove a master-stroke in boosting his confidence.

Substitutes

Not for the first time, Juan Mata was undoubtedly a hero.

He pinged home a marvellous free-kick not long after coming off the bench to start the United comeback.

It took him eight minutes to do anything of note, but it was United's best chance of the half when he turned and fired an effort that only just flew the wrong side of the post.

He should have sealed the win late on, but was denied after a splendid save by the Juve keeper.

Delivered just what United needed – a physical presence when they needed it most.

And it proved a tactical masterstroke from Mourinho, as his subs helped turn around the entire game.
