Although the footage was posted online during his semi-final clash with Marin Cilic at Queen's, it was unclear whether the incident occurred then or earlier in the week.

But either way, there was no “happy ending” for the controversial Australian in the match as he lost 7-6 7-6 to No 1 seed Cilic.

Kyrgios hit another 16 aces to take his total for the week at Queen’s to 98 in a match dominated by serve.

But 2012 champion Cilic emerged the winner by playing better in the tiebreaks and looks in excellent form heading to Wimbledon, where a severe blister wrecked his final against Roger Federer last year.

Kyrgios, too, looks in good shape. He reached the semi-finals in Stuttgart last week where he lost a third-set tiebreak to Roger Federer.

Kyrgios, who has had injury problems this year, said: “I’ve played some good tennis, played some tough opponents.

“I’ve played a lot of three-setters and a lot of tennis. That’s a positive. My body feels pretty good.

“It was a pretty successful couple of weeks, given being out for two-and-a-half-months before that.

“I feel pretty untouchable on serve. Today I just didn’t have any chances to break at all.

“Like he played a pretty clean match.”

But Kyrgios’ water-bottle antics were far from clean.

Viewers at home were quick to have their say.
