Olympic cycling champion Kristina Vogel reveals she is paralysed aged 27 after horror training crash

DOUBLE Olympic cycling champion Kristina Vogel has revealed she is paralysed from the chest down following a horror training crash.

London 2012 and Rio 2016 gold medalist Vogel, 27, severed her spinal cord when she collided with a fellow rider as she was powering around a concrete track at 37 miles per hour.

The smash in June left her in an induced coma, and now specialists have told her she will never regain movement of her body from the chest down.

Vogel said: "It's s**t, you cannot say otherwise. No matter how you pack it, I cannot walk anymore."

The German has been one of the most successful track cyclists of the last ten years, claiming 11 world titles.

She has been one of the biggest rivals to the top British stars like Victoria Pendleton and Becky James — specialising in the individual and team sprints.

But her life changed at the end of June when she collided with a random rider who had entered the track at her training base in Cottbus.

Despite a series of operations Vogel has been left only able to move her arms, hands and head.

She added: "The line between feeling and numbness is a little bit, on the left side it is a bit lower than on the right side.

"But what should I do? I always think that the faster you accept a new situation, the better you can handle it."

It was the second bad training accident of her career, having also been left in a coma when she was hit by a vehicle on the road as an 18-year-old.

That smash left her with a broken back, a broken jaw and fractures to her hands and arms — but she battled back to fitness to climb to the top of the world rankings.

Vogel was a major threat to Pendelton at the London Olympics, but lost out to the GB star in the semi-final of the individual sprint before claiming gold in the team sprint.

She finally claimed the Olympic individual title in Rio four years later, holding off Britain's Becky James to win the final despite her saddle falling off in the race.
