But he endured a Halloween shocker as he withdrew from his clash with Fernando Verdasco at the Paris Masters on doctor’s advice.

The prestigious ATP World Tour finals start in London on Sunday November 11.

If Nadal, 32, cannot play in the last event of 2018, it is likely he will surrender his world No1 slot to rival Novak Djokovic.

Nadal said: “The last few days I start to feel a little bit my abdominal, especially when I was serving.

“The doctor says that it is recommended to not play, because if I continue the abdominal may break and become a major thing. I really don’t want that.

“It has been a tough year for me since that moment in terms of injuries so I want to avoid drastic things.

“I don’t know about London. I just go day by day, as I did all my tennis career.

“I have to be checking daily about things how it improves.

“I would love to be in London, of course. But the most important thing for me is to be healthy and have the chance to compete for a few weeks in a row.

“I don't like to be injured. I don't like this bad news. And I hate to be here and have to pull out from the event.”
