And Vaughan, who led England to the 2005 Ashes victory, tweeted: “So we have picked someone who cannot be arsed with 4 day cricket for the Test Team.

“Forget whether he is good enough or not I find this decision ridiculous.”

Rashid, 30, gave up red-ball cricket in February and has been on a white-ball-only deal at Yorkshire.

He was expected back with them next week but national selector Ed Smith called on him after impressive ODI displays.

Yorkshire are not happy, with boss Martyn Moxon telling BBC: “County clubs are feeling a little bit like doormats. We feel a little bit aggrieved.”

Yorkshire chief exec Mark Arthur raged: “I hope that England know what they’re doing to the county game.”

But national selector Ed Smith insisted Rashid’s recall was a one-off and would not affect the key role of country cricket.

Smith told BBC Sport that "the rest of the selections are all anchored on the supremacy of county cricket".

The former England batsman added: "In no way do I devalue county cricket or think that it's something we shouldn't focus on."
