The 2019 Australian Open, the tennis season’s first Grand Slam, began Monday, Jan. 14, at Rod Laver Arena inside Melbourne Park and will conclude with the men’s and women’s singles championships Sunday, Jan. 27.
In the women’s bracket, the early rounds were mostly chalk save for the Day 2 upset of Victoria Azarenka by Laura Siegemund and the Day 5 defeat of defending champion Caroline Wozniacki by Maria Sharapova. That was until the fourth round, when No. 2 Angelique Kerber and No. 5 Sloane Stephens slipped up against unranked opponents and Sharapova lost to Australian favorite Ash Barty.
Serena Williams, playing her first Australian Open since winning the tournament in 2017, has cruised into the final 16 with consecutive straight-sets victories over Tatjana Maria, Eugenie Bouchard and Dayana Yastremska. The seven-time Australian Open champion remains one Grand Slam victory shy of Margaret Court’s singles record of 24 — a mark she hopes to break in 2019. No. 1 Simona Halep awaits Williams in the fourth round after making quick work of sister Venus in Round 3.
In the men’s bracket, defending champion Roger Federer was dethroned in Round 4 by Stefanos Tsitsipas in a four-set thriller and No. 5 Marin Cilic was dispatched by Roberto Bautista Agut. No. 2 Rafeal Nadal is through to the quarterfinals after defeating Tomas Berdych in straight sets.
