A.J. McKee’s rise up the mixed martial arts ranks has been a real sight to see. Now, the electric 23-year-old featherweight will take on John Teixeira at Bellator 205 on Friday night at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho.
The undefeated McKee (11-0) has spent his entire career in the Viacom-owned promotion, debuting at Bellator 136 in April 2015. He has won seven of 11 fights via stoppage (three submissions, four KOs/TKOs). McKee originally was scheduled to face former featherweight champion Pat Curran in this fight, but Curran bowed out in August because of an unspecified injury.
Teixeira (21-3-2) previously fought in the UFC. After losing to Hugo Viana at UFC 147, the 31-year-old was cut from the promotion because he missed weight by four pounds. A little more than two years later, the Brazilian signed with Bellator and made his promotional and United States debut at Bellator 128 in October 2014, defeating Scott Cleve by split decision. After winning his first five fights inside the Bellator cage, Teixeira has dropped back-to-back fights and been on the sideline for 11 months.
McKee is a rising star in the sport and this bout marks the biggest test of his career. A dominant performance would legitimize him and put him in the contender discussion in the 145-pound division.
