Birmingham UFC star Leon Edwards wants to earn hometown show with Donald Cerrone KO

UFC ace Leon Rocky Edwards has gone all the way to Singapore to bring the show back home to Birmingham and cheer up the fuming football fans.

The welterweight ace is on a five-fight win streak and takes on bonafide MMA legend Donald Cowboy Cerrone on Saturday as the headline act at the 12,000 seater stadium.

A title shot is what the 26-year-old southpaw wants, especially after the underwhelming fight between fellow contenders Darren Till and Stephen Thomson in Liverpool at the end of May.

And a hometown MMA show at the 16,000 Birmingham arena would be the icing on the cake for the Brummie, especially with Aston Villa and the Bluenoses stuck in the Championship.

Edwards said: “We are all homegrown lads, we don’t travel anywhere else for training, it’s good to see.

"We are representing the country and we are doing it from Birmingham.

“After this fight I will 100 per cent be pushing for a show at home, we have good fighters and it would be great to bring them back and headline the bill, the Genting arena (in Birmingham) is a great stadium and everything is perfect for the show.

“The football hasn’t been great here but a UFC show definitely would be.

“I have shown that I can finish fights early or late on but I feel like I need a finish in this fight, especially if I want to call on that Birmingham show. I need to perform.”

Edwards lists his brother Fabian and Renegade team-mates Aaron Chalmers and Tom Breese as the big names capable of helping him host a Midlands UFC spectacular.

And little sibling Fabs – aka the Assassin – is alongside him in Asia preparing for the Saturday night fight.

Leon hopes giving his BAMMA star bro a taste of the UFC will make his inevitable transition smoother as the British family aim to take the company over.

Unlike many of peers, Edwards has climbed the rankings slowly with no trash talk and has paved the way for Fabian to do the same.

He said: “I like bringing him on the journey I am on and showing him the UFC so that when he does get here it will all be normal for him.

“I have fought great opponents coming up and not got carried away with all the talking early on in my career and rushed myself.

“I have had the right fights at the right time and I am now headlining a UFC show at just 26.”

After Leon gets the job done, his manager has the second most important duty of the night – finding a venue for the celebration party.

Rocky said: “That’s down to my manager, he needs to get us a table booked for somewhere, he hasn’t got back to me yet, but he will.”
