But scans have shown the 25-year-old will miss the rest of the season with his injury.

Ajayi moved to the Eagles midway through last season after a trade was agreed with the Miami Dolphins, where Ajayi had fallen out with the coaches.

He is also in the final year of his contract in Philly and will face an anxious wait to determine whether or not he gets offered a new deal.

He became a crucial addition for Doug Pederson's side, as they went on to win their first Super Bowl.

The Eagles are cursing their luck after losing in overtime 23-21 to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

It is now likely head coach will give fellow running backs Corey Clement, Wendell Smallwood, Josh Adams and Darren Sproles more touches during their next few games, including Thursday's NFC East clash with the New York Giants.

Their offence has been battling with the slow and not-too-steady comeback of star quarterback Carson Wentz.

The third-year QB was outstanding before picking up a cruciate ligament injury himself in week 14 last season.

It meant Wentz, 25, missed their play-off charge and the 41-33 Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots in Minnesota.

The Eagles are one of the few NFL teams not to have played at Wembley so far since the first game in 2007.
