Martusciello, 46, a former Genoa and Empoli midfielder, is currently working as the technical collaborator’s at Serie A side Inter Milan but will work alongside Gianfranco Zola as part of the new regime.

Blues legend Zola has admitted talks are underway about Sarri coming in as new boss even though current coach Antonio Conte still had not been sacked.

It was first thought Martusciello, 46, would take over the role of technical director at Chelsea – a position which has been vacant since Michael Emenalo left the club in the middle of last season.

But although Martusciello is renowned for bringing through youth players and developing long term strategies he will have a simpler job as one of Sarri’s assistants alongside former Chelsea striker Zola.

Martusciello was on Sarri’s staff at Empoli and when Sarri left was recommended by him for the main job, which he took in 2016-17.

Chelsea have not made any official announcement regarding the future of boss Conte, who is currently on holiday in the South of Italy, but Sarri is now widely expected to take over and maybe within the next few days.

As SunSport reported on Tuesday, Chelsea could end up with a £15m bill to axe the Italian and replace him with Sarri.

Conte has won the Premier League and FA Cup during two years in charge but his constant clashes with the board over transfer strategy looks set to seal his fate.
