Chris Froome knocked off bike in Tour De France after policeman mistakes him for a fan

CHRIS FROOME was left furious with a policeman after being dragged to the ground in a case of mistaken identity.

The Team Sky cyclist was knocked off his bike when the officer thought he was a supporter trying to ride the course as he returned to the team bus.

It only summed up Froome's day as he struggles for a podium place.

The four-time champion has been forced to hand the Team Sky leadership to Geraint Thomas after falling 48 seconds behind the Welshman.

Froome put on his rain jacket after finishing stage 17 in eighth place and was heading for the bus when a policeman attempted to stop him.

The Brit was not expecting to be impeded and fell to the floor but the 33-year-old was left unharmed.

Chris Froome attacked by fan who tries to PUSH him off his bike during Tour de France –

Thousands of fans get on their bikes to cycle up the mountain to get a closer look at the athletes.

Sky have confirmed that Froome is fine to ride tomorrow.

But he has conceded that his quest for a record-equalling fifth Tour crown is all but over and is now rooting for Thomas.

He said: "It was a tough day, an intense day, but I've got no regrets,

"'G' has ridden such an amazing race, he deserves to be in yellow and fingers crossed he holds it now until Paris.

"I'm happy just to be in the position I'm in. I've won the last three Grand Tours I've done now. It's certainly been a tough build-up for me but I'll still fight for the podium and obviously we want to see G up there in yellow."
