Cristiano Ronaldo dubbed ‘a poor man’s Lukaku’ after shot goes out for a throw-in

CRISTIANO RONALDO has been dubbed 'a poor man's Lukaku' after his wayward free-kick attempt ended up going out for a throw-in.

The Juventus ace netted the game's only goal from 12 yards but it was this ranged effort that earned him the embarrassing moniker of the out-of-form United striker.

Ronaldo has been an instant hit for the Bianconeri, taking his tally for the season to 12 and registering eight assists in 20 appearances this season.

But, just seven minutes into the Turin derby against Torino, Ronaldo provided one of the contenders for one of the worst-free kicks of his career.

The 33-year-old, who once had a fearsome reputation from ranged set-pieces, woefully miscued this effort from the edge of the box as he sent his shot out for a throw-in.

Although Ronaldo did later make amends by scoring Juventus' 500th Serie A goal by converting a penalty, he came in for some harsh criticism online.

One fan believed Ronaldo's recent Ballon D'Or defeat weighed on his mind by saying: "Modric got in his head".

Another argued that: "it was obviously a long ball for DeSciglio who couldn't understand Cristiano genius play".

Though perhaps the harshest critique of the winger's attempt was: "Just a poor man's Romelu Lukaku".

United's £75million striker has struggled for form this season and he left supporters frustrated again with his display in midweek as Jose Mourinho's side slipped to a 2-1 loss in Spain.

The 25-year-old's all-around game has been brought into focus in the past as he lacks the finesse of other top-level forwards in the game.

But in other matches, he struggles to exert his authority and some fans believe he costs United through the basic flaw in his game, failing to control the ball.

Earlier this month, Lukaku had finally ended his Old Trafford goal drought as he netted United’s third against Fulham, having not scored at home in the league for 997 minutes.
