Panesar, 36, was a huge character during his player career having burst into the England squad for his abilities as a left arm spin bowler.

His lack of natural batting and fielding skills initially saw him targeted for ironic cheering from the stands, which was meant and received in good nature.

But with the ball in hand he could be devastating in the right conditions, and ended up playing 50 Test matches taking 167 wickets.

His public appeal cut across from just sport and he became a celebrity away from the game.

He had been due to star in Dancing on Ice but pulled out when he suffered an injury in training.

But he has since gone on to star in the latest series of Celebrity Masterchef on the BBC.
