Europe’s Ryder Cup ‘Moliwood’ dream team forged during holiday in Bahamas

THE ‘Moliwood’ dream team was forged in the Bahamas when the Ryder Cup’s latest dynamic duo were on holiday.

But Tommy Fleetwood admitted he could never have guessed his partnership with pal Francesco Molinari would earn them “rock star” status.

Fleetwood’s wife, Clare, used to be Molinari’s manager, and she is still close friends with his wife, Valentina.

The two couples holidayed together after the USPGA Championship in August and the golfers decided they would ask Thomas Bjorn to let them team up — after a bit of prompting from Clare.

She said: “I’m not jealous of this bromance between the pair of them one bit — I was the one who encouraged it!”

It proved an inspired move as Fleetwood, 27, and Open champ Molinari, 35, became the first European duo to win a maximum four points in the team events.

European No 1 Fleetwood said: “We saw that Moliwood tag coming if we did well — it’s quite catchy isn’t it?

“It’s all been great really. We have made our own little bit of history together.

“We spend quite a lot of time together, anyway. Clare and Valentina are very close. They speak a lot and me and Fran play practice rounds together.

“We were actually on holiday in the Bahamas together when we started talking about the Ryder Cup.

“It was a week after the USPGA, and obviously we knew we’d both qualified for the team.

“You know who you get on with. So we spoke to Thomas Bjorn and we always knew we were more than likely going to play the first day.

“Then it was down to us to play well together. We were a perfect match in the end.

“Sometimes things just work, they come off. Our games suit each other really well.”

And Fleetwood got a massive kick out of partying with the fans, and said the scenes around the 18th green will live with him forever.

He added: “I loved celebrating with the fans. They were amazing. I really chucked myself into it. You have to, don’t you?

“I cannot really remember letting go like that before, but I don’t normally have 50,000 people around egging me on.

“This was just a fantastic feeling. I’ve never won a Ryder Cup with team-mates before and had a crowd like that behind you.

“I haven’t seen any pictures of me charging around like a maniac but I was having a good time!

“I don’t want to sound philosophical but you cannot be certain you will play on another Ryder Cup-winning team, so enjoy it while you can.

“For us, it is the closest thing we get to being a rock star, a footballer scoring a goal in a World Cup final — that is what it feels like. That is our World Cup. It is very, very cool.”
