Emelianenko (37-5), the former PRIDE heavyweight champion, punched his way into the semifinals by notching a 48-second TKO of Frank Mir at April’s Bellator 198. The 41-year-old, regarded by many MMA pundits as the greatest heavyweight of all time, comes in having won six of his last seven fights, with the only loss being to fellow semifinalist, Matt Mitrione at Bellator NYC in June 2017 in his first bout under the Viacom-owned promotion.
Sonnen (31-15-1), a former three-time UFC title challenger in two different weight classes, advanced to the semifinals by defeating Quinton “Rampage” Jackson via unanimous decision at Bellator 192. He has won back-to-back fights after suffering a first round submission loss to Tito Ortiz in his Bellator debut at Bellator 170 in 2017.
The other semifinal contest occurs the day before at Bellator 207 from the Mohegan Sun in Unicasville, Conn., when Mitrione takes on light heavyweight champion Ryan Bader. The winners of each fight will meet in the finals either at the end of year or in the first quarter of 2019. The winner of the tournament will be crowned the Bellator heavyweight champion.
