After scans, he was ruled out of the first of the four-Test series which begins at Adelaide on Thursday.

But team bosses hope he may even return for the Second Test on December 14.

Shaw became the youngest Indian batsman to score a ton on Test debut during October’s home series against the Windies.

Speaking after the incident, he said: "It's unfortunate what's happened, but these things happen.

"It's an opportunity for someone else."

Star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said: "Sad that it happened the first time he came out on the field. He has not spoken much.

"He's a young boy who has come to play in Australia for the first time, had a dream start to his Test career, so it's hit him pretty hard."

Shaw is now expected to undergo an intensive rehabilitation programme in order to return as soon as possible.
