Ilya Kovalchuk is back on the ice.

The Kings announced they activated Kovalchuk from injured reserve and he was in uniform Saturday for the team’s game against the Sharks. Kings defenseman Dion Phaneuf was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move.

Kovalchuk had been out since he underwent an ankle procedure Dec. 2. He netted a goal in the first period of his return against San Jose.

He went on to score the game-winner in overtime, securing a 3-2 victory for the Kings.

Kovalchuk, who previously spent five years with SKA St. Petersburg in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, signed a three-year, $18.75 million contract with the Kings before the start of the season.

Los Angeles entered the matchup against the Sharks with a 12-20-3 record.
