James Vince recalled by England for crucial Fourth Test against India in case Jonny Bairstow fails to win fitness race

JAMES VINCE has been recalled by England for the Fourth Test and will play if Jonny Bairstow is unfit.

Hampshire captain Vince has not played Test cricket since scoring 76 against New Zealand in Christchurch in March.

He is on standby to return at his home ground in Southampton as Bairstow faces a race against time to recover from the fractured left middle finger he suffered in the Third Test at Trent Bridge.

National selector Ed Smith said: “We felt this was the right time to re-introduce James Vince to the Test squad. He will provide cover in case Jonny Bairstow’s fractured finger prevents him playing.

“James returns in confident form and scoring runs. He has been in excellent form for Hampshire and scored 74 and 147 in their win over Notts this week.”

Sunsport understands that, even if Bairstow is fit to play, he will not keep wicket and Jos Buttler will wear the gloves.

Buttler took over from Bairstow during the Third Test and went on to score a maiden Test century in England’s second innings.

Either Bairstow or Vince will bat at No.4, allowing new boy Ollie Pope to drop down to five or six.

Under-pressure openers Keaton Jennings and Alastair Cook have both been retained.

Essex seamer Jamie Porter, in the squad for the previous two Tests but yet to make his England debut, has been omitted.

India’s win by 203 runs at Trent Bridge means England now lead the series 2-1 with two Tests to play.
