It is understood that Mourinho was infuriated with an Instagram post Pogba uploaded following the defeat against Derby in the Carabao Cup.

Both men have been at loggerheads with each other all season, with the Portuguese manager stripping the 25-year-old of his vice-captaincy.

Their confrontation has led Carragher to side with Mourinho, whilst insisting the ex-Juventus ace isn't as good as he thinks he is.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "If Mourinho goes you won't see a new Pogba.

Paul Pogba set to be sold in January after Jose Mourinho tells squad he will never captain Manchester United again

"He's not as a good as he thinks he is. His big problem is his understanding of the game. You can sum up his performances in his last two games – a great goal vs Young Boys but he was at fault for Wolves' goal.

"He would have the big clubs going in for him but Barcelona would be the biggest ill fit for him. Pogba plays for himself. He's not really a captain. He's let his agent speak ill of the club. He's not the man."

Before adding: "I would stick with Mourinho before Pogba. But It's easier to take a manager out of the situation than a player."

It is understood that Mourinho is demanding the backing of the board following his latest bust-up with the £89million man.
