Jarrod Lyle dead at 36: Australian golfer passes away after long battle with leukaemia

AUSTRALIAN golfer Jarrod Lyle has died after a long battle with leukaemia.

The 36-year-old, who beat cancer in 1998 and 2012, died peacefully, surrounded by family in Torquay, Victoria.

His heartbroken wife Briony released a statement on social media thanking his fans for their support.

Last week, Lyle made the decision to stop undergoing treatment.

He had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia when he was 17 and had beaten it twice before it returned last year.

The champion golfer, who two pro tournaments – the Mexican Open and Knoxville Open – in his career, is survived by Briony and his daughters Lusi, 6, and Jemma, 2.

Briony posted a moving statement to social media after his death was announced.

She wrote: "It breaks my heart to tell everyone that Jarrod is no longer with us.

"Lusi, Jemma and I are filled with grief and now must confront our lives without the greatest husband and father we could ever have wished for.

"At the same time, we have been blessed and overwhelmed with the messages and actions of support from around the world and feel comforted that Jarrod was able to happily impact so many people throughout his life.

"Our humble thanks to you all.

"Jarrod was able to take in many of the unbelievably kind and generous acts and words in his final few days and was overwhelmed by the emotional outpouring.

"He asked that I provide a simple message: 'Thanks for your support, it meant the world.

"'My time was short, but if I've helped people think and act on behalf of those families who suffer through cancer, hopefully it wasn't wasted'."

It breaks my heart to tell everyone that Jarrod is no longer with us.

He passed away peacefully at 8.20pm last night, having spent his final week in Torquay among his family and close friends.

Lusi, Jemma and I are filled with grief and now must confront our lives without the greatest husband and father we could ever have wished for.

At the same time, we have been blessed and overwhelmed with the messages and actions of support from around the world and feel comforted that Jarrod was able to happily impact so many people throughout his life. Our humble thanks to you all.

Jarrod was able to take in many of the unbelievably kind and generous acts and words in his final few days and was overwhelmed by the emotional outpouring.

He asked that I provide a simple message: "Thanks for your support, it meant the world. My time was short, but if I’ve helped people think and act on behalf of those families who suffer through cancer, hopefully it wasn’t wasted".

We will hold an intimate and private family service in the coming days.

There will be a public memorial service at The Sands in Torquay at a date to be annouced later.

As per Jarrod’s wish, please donate to Challenge in lieu of gifts or flowers.'

Briony also said that a private family service would be held in addition to a public memorial service at The Sands golf club in Torquay, at a date to be announced.

Fans and well-wishers are also encouraged to donate to Challenge, a charity that provides support for children with cancer, instead of gifts or flowers.

After announcing he would go into palliative care, Lyle's supporters raised hundreds of thousands to help support his daughters in the future.

The total currently stands at more than A$300,000 (£173,000) with the Tiger Woods Foundation among the donors.

Woods has worn a Leuk the Duck badge in his cap as a sign of support for Lyle.

A number of PGA pros have contributed to the fund, with Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama donating $50,000 and Bryson DeChambeau giving $25,000.

Players at the upcoming USPGA Championships are expected to wear yellow ribbons as a mark of remembrance for Lyle.
