The Jets could be without defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers for their Week 5 game, coach Todd Bowles announced Friday.
Bowles said Rodgers, 49, is dealing with a “serious” illness and he’s unsure if he will coach against the Broncos on Sunday.
“He is ill of a nature we can’t discuss right now,” Bowles said (via NJ Advance Media). “We’ll see going forward where he is and go from there. He’s a tough guy.”
Jets safety Rontez Miles said Bowles also discussed the defensive coordinator’s illness with the team Friday.
“We’ve got to keep moving forward and getting ready for the game and do this for him,” Miles said. “Everybody is feeling the impact of that, man. He’s a big part of this family and team. He’s always been a genuine and real, upstanding guy. It’s tough, because you’re close. You feel the pain him and his family are going through.
“We’re all praying for him. It’s just surreal to just see him here the other day, and he’s going through that.”
Bowles and Rodgers are close friends as they’ve worked together for 11 seasons with three different teams, according to NJ Advance Media. Both have been in their roles with New York since 2015.
