Joe Root continues stunning form but Lancashire beat rivals Yorkshire in Roses epic

JOE ROOT continued his epic form but couldn’t prevent Yorkshire losing a thrilling Twenty20 match to Lancashire.

Test skipper Root scored 51 not out from just 22 balls but the Red Rose county sneaked home by one run in front of 22,000 fans at Old Trafford.

It followed Root’s back-to-back centuries in the final two matches of the one-day series against India.

Kiwi star Kane Williamson needed to hit the final delivery from rookie left-arm seamer Toby Lester for four – but could manage only two.

Captain Liam Livingstone plundered 79 from 37 deliveries as Lancashire piled up 175-4 in 14 overs after the start was delayed by rain.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who refuses to play red ball cricket for Yorkshire but says he might consider a Test recall, was hammered for 0-44 off three overs.

Liam Plunkett and Root kept Yorkshire in the hunt in it, with Plunkett smashing 19 off nine before he was bowled by Jordan Clark.

Tim Bresnan hit 17 from nine before he was caught on the boundary off James Faulkner.

Yorkshire needed 17 from the final over bowled by Lester, playing just his fourth T20 game.

Three boundaries from Root reduced that to five from two balls, and a single meant four to win off the last.

But Lester kept his cool, with Williamson only managing two as Yorkshire finished on 175 for four.

The ground was packed and the atmosphere electric.

It does ask the question why the ECB feel the need to invent a new 100-ball competition with made-up teams.
