Jon Gruden said the reports of him never talking to Khalil Mack aren’t true.
The new Raiders coach said when the organization hired him six months ago, he talked to the pass rusher.
“I did speak with him when I got the job,” Gruden said on Fox Sports Radio. “When I first got hired, I spoke with him.”
However, Gruden did admit that he has not talked to Mack since.
“He’s been a hard guy to get in contact with lately, for obvious reasons,” Gruden said. “This is a great football player, not only that, he’s a great guy. And everybody on our team respects him and loves him. We hope to get him in here soon.”
Mack has been trying to negotiate a new contract with the Raiders and is holding out from training camp, but Gruden said he has had no part in the talks.
“I think (Raiders general manager) Reggie McKenzie is the guy you should talk to,” Gruden said. “He’s the man talking to Joel Segal — the agent — and we’ll just cross our fingers [that a deal gets done].”
Mack is scheduled to make $13.8 million in 2018 in the final year of his rookie contract.
