Jose Mourinho slammed for picking Ashley Young at right-back over Diogo Dalot and Antonio Valencia as Newcastle torment the veteran

MANCHESTER UNITED fans slammed Jose Mourinho for picking veteran Ashley Young at right-back instead of players who specialise in the position.

The Red Devils boss picked the England international over club captain Antonio Valencia – who was left out of the squad entirely – and £19m summer signing Diogo Dalot, who was sat on the bench.

The decision quickly backfired as Newcastle raced into a shock 2-0 lead at Old Trafford inside 10 minutes.

Kenedy scored the opening goal and found the space for his shot after wrong-footing Young, who couldn’t get close to the on-loan Chelsea striker.

Explaining his decision to pick Young before kick-off, Mourinho said: “Ashley Young can give us a bit more energy and speed on the right side.”

The first half got worse for Young, who hand-balled the ball in the box from a free-kick. Fortunately for the ex-Aston Villa player the referee missed the incident.

There was an outpouring of anger from Manchester United fans on social media who questioned Mourinho’s judgement.

The timing couldn’t have been worse for Mourinho, who came into the match under huge pressure following a run of poor results that saw the Red Devils start the day 10th in the Premier League.

Mourinho reacted to the shocking start by hauling off Eric Bailly and replacing the centre-back with Juan Mata.

Before the match reports suggested the United boss would lose his job even if his side beat Newcaste.

However the club have denied these reports and insist they have no plans to dismiss the Portuguese manager.
United last went five games at Old Trafford without winning in 1989-90 but will repeat the feat if they fail to get three points against Rafael Benitez's side.
