Following the race, in which the Briton benefited from team orders to finish ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton spoke with the Russian president.

Three years previously a fearless Hamilton had soaked Putin on the podium by spraying him with champagne.

At the time the leader laughed it off – but Hamilton didn't want to take any chances with a repeat.

He quickly promised the leader he wouldn't be drenching him this time around.

In the green room after the race, Putin was caught on TV speaking to a translator, who turned to Hamilton and said: "I am accustomed to awarding you something each year. Year, after year…"

Hamilton, 33, interrupted him and said: "This year I won't spray you with Champagne. Last year it wasn't me. It was someone else!"

Hamilton stayed true to his word on the podium.

The four-time world champion accepted the trophy for winning the race and shook Putin's hand.

The victory saw Hamilton close in on a fifth world title with rival Sebastian Vettel finishing third.

It means Vettel no longer controls his own destiny and will be relying on Hamilton to slip up severely in the remaining races of the season.
