Martin Murray blasts Billy Joe Saunders and says he would only agree to fight if there was an ‘insurance policy’

MARTIN MURRAY has again blasted Billy Joe Saunders for pulling out of two world title defences and says he would only take the fight again if there was 'an insurance policy'.

The St Helen's hitter coasted to a comfortable points victory against gritty Mexican Roberto Garcia to win the WBC Silver middleweight title.

It was Garcia's first defeat for eight years and puts 35-year-old Murray back in the mix for a fifth world title shot.

And despite being mandatory for Gennady Golovkin's WBC strap, the bad blood with Saunders means it's a fight boxing fans would be desperate to see.

The reigning WBO champ pulled out of two bouts against Murray this year, citing injuries picked up in training.

Speaking ringside after outpointing Garcia at The O2 in London, Murray said he simply wouldn't trust that Saunders would ever get in the ring with him.

He said: "It’s one of them isn’t it. He’s not done me once he has done me twice.

"For a third time, there would have to be some kind of insurance policy in place.

"I can’t do it. I do this for my kids, that’s it. I want money for my family, I want a world title and I couldn’t trust to fight him again.

"But if some fight came up with some type of insurance policy then of course I would take it.

"I can’t keep doing it. My life has been on hold for six months.

"Fair enough I’ve been over in Tenerife, I’ve had training camps, made memories for life, but I’ve taken time away from my kids and my wife and family that I will never ever get back.

"It’s frustrating but I’m an experienced fighter, I’ve been here a long time now and I kind of expect it from boxing."

With Golovkin scheduled to rematch against Canelo Alvarez in September, Murray, who promoter Frank Warren said will be back out in September, may have to look at different paths to a world title.

Billy Joe Saunders responds to the criticism of Martin Murray calling the St Helens fighter a bum

His four cracks at the big time, including a stoppage loss to Triple G back in 2015, have not dampened Murray's ambition to be a true champion.

Two were points losses to home favourites Sergio Martinez and Arthur Abraham, while many thought he had done enough in a draw with Felix Sturm.

All three of these could have gone either way.

And clearly the fire is burning still in the seasoned veteran.

He added: "That saying you only get out of it what you put in, that’s full of s**t.

"I’ve put absolutely everything into boxing and I don’t get just rewards.

"But I’m with Frank now and hopefully he can get me another shot."
