Nathan Hughes could miss England’s autumn series after being cited for punching

NATHAN HUGHES could miss the whole of England's crunch autumn series after being cited for punching.

The Wasps and Red Rose no.8 is up in front of the RFU discipline bods on Wednesday for supposedly clocking Gloucester's Lewis Ludlow in the head.

And because he stands accused of whacking another player in the head – the punishment, if found guilty, carries a minimum six weeks out.

England's first game against South Africa is on November 3 with the All Blacks, Australia and Japan all to follow.

With bulldozer Billy Vunipola back fit, Hughes would most likely have been his back-up off the bench at Twickenham.

But boss Eddie Jones could look pretty lightweight in second string no.8s as Sam Simmonds is out for the season and Bath rookie Zach Mercer is the next cab off the rank.

Just 12 months ago Hughes was slapped with a two-week ban for striking, so he doesn't even have a squeaky clean record in his favour.

The Fiji-born star has 17 appearances for England and has scored one try.

He made his debut in November 2016, coming off the bench to replace Tom Wood against South Africa.

Hughes signed for current side Wasps and has made over 100 appearances for the club since joining from Auckland in 2013.

Ludlow is also in trouble for allegedly stamping on Lions and England ace Elliot Daly in the same game.

Gloucester won the match 35-21 at the Ricoh Arena.
Both hearings will take place in Coventry.
