New England Patriots hero Rob Gronkowski dents NFL trophy by using it as baseball bat

LIFE'S a pitch for NFL legend Rob Gronkowski – as he dented the Super Bowl trophy by using it as a baseball bat.

The 29-year-old is still making a big impact in gridiron despite retiring following the New England Patriots' record-equalling sixth Super Bowl win two months ago.

Boston Red Sox invited several Patriots heroes to their opening day rituals.

And when NFL MVP Julian Edelman hurled a delivery at Gronkowski, the former tight end left the famous Lombardi Trophy needing more than a slight mend.

Fellow Patriots stars Jason McCourty and Duron Harmon were convinced Gronkowski would not actually use the priceless silverware as a bat.

But for once the understanding amongst the all-conquering team-mates was way off beam.

With Edelman's throw angling towards him, Gronkowski swung out defensively – and left the trophy with an egg-shaped dent.

It was wham bang in what might be called the sweet spot… had the trophy been a bat.

And unlike the cup itself, Gronkowski himself looked far from abashed afterwards.

The three-time Super Bowl winner, who is being linked with a stunning switch to WWE, grinned open-mouthed as he held it up.

Surely not many people could escape a battering for such a jape.

But in a video of the incident filmed by the Patriots' media team, Harmon can be heard saying: "If anybody could do it and get away with it, it’d be Mr Gronkowski himself."

New Yorker Gronkowski bowed out of NFL with a key role in the Patriots' 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53.

He teed up Sony Michel for the only touchdown with just seven minutes remaining.

And in an eight-year career spent entirely with the Patriots, Gronkowski won the Pro Bowl five times, whilst also making the First Team All-Pro selection on four occasions.

So perhaps that's why he was less than bash-ful after his antics at the Red Sox do.
