Super Bowl 53 will be played at Atlanta's massive Mercedes-Benz Stadium home but supporters may have to make do without the game-day staple, guacamole.

Mexican producers usually ship an enormous batch of avocados into the United States every February.

However, with Mexico's government clamping down on fuel theft, there has been a week-long shortage of petrol, meaning many of the nation's states are completely dry.

One state, Michoacan, is the nation's principal avocado-grower – and had aimed to send an incredible 120,000 tonnes of the fruit to the US.

On the shortage, a spokesperson claimed: "Our three most important weeks of the year are this one and the next two. This is when we ship for Super Bowl week.

"We have from now to January 24, 25 to ship all that volume. If we don't ship it [by then], we can't do so later."

All 320 petrol stations in Michoacan are currently suffering amidst the fuel crisis, with public transport and even tourism affected.

Pictures from Mexico recently have shown local citizens queuing around the block in order to fill-up on what was left of the state's fuel.

It's not only fans in the Super Bowl stadium who will have to go without guac on February 3… with fans at home facing the same problem, thanks to issues stocking the supermarkets.

Around 100 million fans tune in to watch the Super Bowl every year – making a big event of it, cracking open beers and diving into snacks such as nachos and wings.
