The 49ers have signed quarterback Tom Savage, according to ESPN’s Jordan Schultz.
Schultz previously reported that Tuesday is the target date to make the move official, and Savage will need to undergo a physical.
The 49ers are looking for quarterback depth in the wake of Jimmy Garoppolo’s season-ending ACL injury in Week 3. His replacement, second-year quarterback C.J. Beathard, has averaged 347 yards passing in two starts with four touchdowns and four interceptions. Yet his backup, Nick Mullens, is a rookie, so it couldn’t hurt for the 49ers to bring in Savage as insurance.
A fourth-round pick by the Texans in 2014, Savage started nine games in three seasons in Houston, passing for 2,000 yards with a 57.5 percent completion rate. He had five touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Savage joined the Saints as a free agent in March but didn’t make the 53-man roster.
The 49ers are slated to host the undefeated Rams at 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday.
