The American even hit the front heading into the back nine before a double bogey at the 11th stopped his charge.
Molinari, 35, eventually won by two shots.

He said: “Tiger was the best player on the course over the front nine and you could feel the excitement growing.

“Then he hit a couple of loose shots unfortunately and you will always pay a heavy penalty on a course as tough as Carnoustie.

“But he was very generous congratulating me and I think we can all see he is back as a force in these events.

Tiger Woods and Rory Mcilroy both react after the final round of the 147th Open at Carnoustie

“The way he played he will definitely win more Majors because he is getting better and stronger all the time.

“He was like the old Tiger, fighting hard for the trophy and playing unbelievable golf.”

Woods also received an unexpected bonus for his best finish in the Majors for five years, as he climbed to 50th in the world rankings — enough to get him into the elite field for the Bridgestone Invitational in two weeks’ time.

The 14-time Major champion has won that event EIGHT times.

It also provided him with his most recent victory, in 2013.

He thought he had to finish in the top four at Carnoustie to qualify.

And after the final round he was cursing the short birdie putt he missed on the last that would have earned him a share of second.

But he will now take his place at Firestone, before teeing it up at the USPGA in St Louis the following week.
