The Padres have made possibly the most unique move of the MLB offseason to date.
According to The Athletic, San Diego has sold third baseman Christian Villanueva to the Yomiuri Giants of the Nippon Professional Baseball organization in Japan.
Correction: #Padres have sold 3B Christian Villanueva’s rights to the Yomiuri Giants, not the Hanshin Tigers.

There has been no report on what the Padres will receive in return.
San Diego has not confirmed the deal.
Villanueva, 27, batted .236 with 20 home runs and 46 RBIs for San Diego in his rookie year last year.
