Oosthuizen, who has dealt with back issues in the past, has a runner-up finish in all four majors but has won just one. He has twice lost in a playoff (2012 Masters, 2015 Open Championship).
Kelly Kraft took Oosthuizen’s place in the field as an alternate, teeing off Thursday afternoon with Bill Haas and Thomas Pieters.
Oosthuizen, ranked 34th in the world, has eight top-25 finishes on the PGA Tour this season.
