Racing driver Santino Ferrucci banned after driving Formula 2 car while holding MOBILE PHONE – and crashing into team-mate

A FORMULA 2 driver has been banned from the next two events after driving with a MOBILE PHONE in his hand – and slamming into his team-mate on purpose.

American Santino Ferrucci, 20, was competing in the Championship Sprint Race at Silverstone but was penalised for three separate incidents and refused to show up to the hearings, resulting in fines adding up to £60,000.

Hard one to swallow here at Monaco. Leaving with a knot in my stomach after knowing our potential this weekend. Time to move past this and on to Indycar in Detroit! #unlucky #itsracing #alwayspushing #nevergiveup

The 20-year-old was penalised after holding his phone in one hand while driving with just one glove.

Ferrucci was transporting his car from the paddock to the pit lane.

He violated both the Technical and Sporting Regulations for incorrect driver safety equipment – which prohibits having a mobile in the car – leading to a £5,300 fine.

This came after he was earlier punished for crashing into his Trident team-mate Arjun Maini on the cool down lap of the race.

The incident, which saw him drive into the rear of Maini, was deemed to be deliberate.

Stewards met with his team bosses, who confirmed that it was a premeditated incident, resulting in a £53,000 fine.

In another incident with his team-mate, Ferrucci was penalised for forcing Maini off the road.

It happened at turn four when the Indian driver tried to overtake Ferrucci, only to find himself being driven off the track.
