Saquon Barkley may miss the Giants preseason game Friday against the Lions.
The 21-year-old rookie running back was held out of Giants practice Tuesday and is currently “day-to-day” with a tweaked left hamstring, New York coach Pat Shurmur told reporters. Shurmur said the team will be “smart” with its handling of Barkley’s injury.
“If he’s able to go, he’ll play,” Shurmur said (via The Detroit News). “If he’s not, he won’t be out there.”
The No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft originally suffered the injury while making a catch in practice Monday. The team later called it a “mild strain.”
Barkley registered 43 rushing yards on four carriers in his preseason debut Thursday against the Browns.
The Giants will open the regular season Sept. 9 against the Jaguars.
