The 37-year-old and coach Severin Luthi managed to get a good rhythm of headers going with a fluorescent football.

But Federer got too much behind the 14th header in the rally and forced Luthi to stretch, falling over the sofa before somehow keeping the rally going.

The Swiss legend then showed off his excellent control with his feet as he brought the ball under control but Luthi caught it to bring the impressive rally to an abrupt end after 19 touches.

Federer will next be in action at the ATP Western & Southern Open, which starts on Monday.

Seeded second, he received a bye for the first round but if he wins his second round match, he could face Andy Murray in the last-16.

It is a strong draw at the Masters event with the world's top 13 players in action as Grigor Dimitrov looks to defend the title he won 12 months ago.

Novak Djokovic, the Wimbledon champion and 10th seed, is the favourite to win the tournament for the first time despite losing five previous finals.

Federer has won all seven of his finals in Cincinnati and will be confident of reaching another this year, with Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the same quarter at the top of the draw.

This is the last major tournament on the ATP tour before the US Open gets underway on August 27th with Federer seeking a sixth triumph at Flushing Meadows.

And if Federer's Instagram story is anything to go by, he is feeling in a relaxed mood ahead of a busy month, despite the poor weather.
