Woods announced the match on Twitter on Wednesday after it had first been mooted earlier this summer.

It is expected to take place at Shadow Creek Golf Course in the Nevada desert.

Las Vegas is more used to hosting heavyweight boxing clashes, but it will be centre of the sporting universe for a different reason in November.

The news coincided with Mickelson joining Twitter on the same day, and there was some early verbal sparring.

Mickelson commented: "I bet you think this is the easiest $9M you will ever make".

Woods has returned from injury this season and come close to securing an elusive 15th Major title – ending his 10-year wait.

Tiger finished tied for sixth at The Open in July before an exhilarating run to second place in the PGA Championship this month.

Both men are competing in the Northern Trust Open at the Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey.

Mickelson is tenth in the FedEx Cup standings while Woods is 20th meaning both men are well placed to make the season-ending Tour Championship.

But the pair will both be reliant on wild cards to make the USA team for the Ryder Cup in France next month after missing out on automatic qualification.
