Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham are 'disadvantaged' despite beating Roma 4-1

Wanyama, 27, missed Wednesday's win over Roma – with Spurs insisting the decision was purely precautionary.

The Evening Standard claim he will be assessed on Thursday ahead of their next International Champions Cup clash against Barcelona on Sunday.

Spurs are already without England midfielders Eric Dier and Dele Alli, Belgium ace Mousa Dembele, and Harry Winks who is recovering from ankle surgery.

Losing Wanyama as well would leave Mauricio Pochettino with a serious problem ahead of their Premier League opener against Newcastle on August 11.

Luke Amos, 21, started in Wanyama's place in the 4-1 win over Roma but Poch was careful not to get carried away with his performance after he was compared with ex-Spurs star Ryan Mason.

He said: "Yes but I don’t want to say there is a similarity with the feeling I got with Ryan. But Luke played very well and he still needs to work hard.

"I thought he and all our midfielders who came on the pitch showed an amazing energy.

"I am so happy we have these types of players who are always willing to work so hard and keep running.

"Luke has a lot of quality. He needs to work hard to find the opportunity to play.

"But I am so proud of his performance and that of all our midfielders."

Spurs signed Wanyama in 2016 for £11million from Southampton.

He has made 54 appearances since joining and has been used both in midfield and at centre-back.
