A witness, who was first at the scene, said the lorry driver initially pulled over before driving off at speed.

The South African-born star won gold at the Ironman 70.3 in 2008 and silver in 2013.

The witness told stuff.co.nz: "When the truck drove off I saw a man lying on the road.

"I jumped out to help him; he was semi-conscious and his bike was in two pieces.

What a day here at im703busso. After a rocky start for us all, with the event having to substitute the swim for a 3km run due to the very strong onshore wind. I still went after my target of breaking the 2hr mark on the bike course. The roads were wet and the wind was up, but thankfully I got myself clear of the group and was able to slice through the ride in 1hr58min. Really happy that I was still able to hold it together for the run and break the tape. Congrats to @callummillward and @crowiealexander and everyone else who made it to the finish. It was a tough day out there! Thanks #busso
