When a fighter gets into the UFC, the goal is always to become a world champion at any cost, but Darren Till is taking that goal to an extreme.
Heading into his main event title shot against welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 228, Till’s coach, Colin Heron sent him to Brazil not only get his act together, but to train and become a real fighter who could one day make a run at UFC gold.
While he was in the South America, Till got his then-girlfriend pregnant. As he inches closer to his dream, the 25-year-old is putting “legacy and greatness” ahead of those close to him.
“You can’t have worries outside of this game,” Till told reporters backstage Saturday night at UFC 227. “I’ve got a girlfriend who’s nearly seven months pregnant. I don’t really care. I’ve got a daughter in Brazil right now who I haven’t seen for one year. I don’t really care. I just care about legacy and greatness. That’s what I’m in this for.
“I’m not in this to make money, be a champion, leave. I’m in this for people to say at the end of it, ‘You were the greatest.’ That’s my only mentality. F— money, f— everything else.”
UFC 228 takes place on Sept. 8 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Tex. Along with the Woodley vs. Till headliner, Nicco Montano will defend the women’s flyweight title against Valentina Shevchenko.
