UK heatwave could delay start of football season with dry weather destroying pitches

THE 2018-19 football season is at risk of being POSTPONED… thanks to the weather.

The UK has been gripped by a chronic heatwave for the past few weeks – with little respite coming from last week's storm.

Now the soaring temperatures have put the new campaign in jeopardy, as clubs are struggling to get their pitches match-ready.

A host of clubs across the country have already been forced to forfeit thousands of pounds after cancelling pre-season friendlies.

Now the baking hot weather could mean some clubs postpone league matches to avoid the risk of serious injuries to players.

Rodney Neale, chairman of Somerset minnow Shepton Mallet AFC, revealed the danger dry, crumbling pitches could create.

Neale claimed: "Imagine a youngster who has his career ahead of him putting his foot in [one of the holes] and breaking his ankle."

Some clubs such as Kettering Town have been forced to douse the field in over 30,000 litres of water, just to get the pitch lush, green and – most importantly – safe.

Lincoln City are just one Football League team having to cancel pre-season friendlies due to the weather.

The club claimed the almost unprecedented heat had had a "detrimental effect on the pitch".

It's likely the Premier League and big Football League clubs will have no problems thanks to their around-the-clock grounds staff and lack of money worries.

But others may not be so lucky and with the weather showing no signs of cooling down, let alone raining, the season may be put-back for some.
