Forward Lanzini, 25, was initially told he could be back in under a year after rupturing cruciate ligaments in the build up to the World Cup.

But the situation is now being described as a 'cruciate plus' – meaning he faces much longer on the comeback trail.

Lanzini was hurt in training with the South Americans just a week or so before the tournament kicked off in Russia.

He is a key player for The Irons and is seen as the pivotal figure at the heart of the team.

New boss Manuel Pellegrini may be forced to move into the transfer market as a result of developments with one of West Ham's best players.

The club has already broken its transfer record to sign £25 million defender Issa Diop.

They have also forked out £7m for goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski and defender Ryan Fredericks from Fulham.

Meanwhile, Hammers defender Sam Byram is set to depart the London Stadium to join Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan.
