Why isn’t Henrikh Mkhitaryan playing for Arsenal against Qarabag and would he be able to play at the Europa League final?

ARSENAL travel to Qarabag for the Europa League but they will be without key man Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian inspired the Gunners to a 4-2 win over Vorskla Poltava in their opening game but has not travelled to Azerbaijan.

Why is Henrikh Mkhitaryan not playing for Arsenal against Qarabag?

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is not injured or suspended, but has not travelled to Baku due to security fears.

Azerbaijan and Mkhitaryan's native Armenia have no diplomatic relations following a war over Nagorno-Karabakh, the province after which Qarabag are named.

The ethnic Armenian territory was part of Azerbaijan before the fall of the Soviet Union but was seized by Armenia following the 1988-94 war and granted de facto independence.

While the government of Azerbaijan do make exceptions for sportsmen when required, Mkhitaryan chose personally not to travel.

The attacking midfielder made the same decision in 2015 when former club Dortmund were drawn with another Azeri side, Gabala, in the Europa League.

Will Henrikh Mkhitaryan be able to play in the Europa League final if Arsenal get there?

With the Europa League final in Baku this season, there would be the potential for Mkhitaryan to sit that game out as well, should Arsenal make it that far.

Uefa have confirmed that they would ensure Mkhitaryan received an Azeri visa for the Europa League final, just as they would have done for the match against Qarabag.

A spokesman said last month: “It is a standard procedure for UEFA to send letters of support to associations, clubs or embassies in order to obtain visa for players in order to be able to travel to another country and play in UEFA competition matches.”

Therefore, if Arsenal reached the Europa League final the decision would once again rest with Mkhitaryan.

But given the importance of the match, the Armenian would be under a lot more pressure to play and would most likely choose to do so.
