But despite having just one job to take care of, Harlow made the fatal error of waving the chequered flag a lap EARLY.

Instead of signalling to the drivers after the 70th lap, Harlow bizarrely started parading the flag after the 69th instead.

It led to huge confusion from winner Sebastian Vettel, who told his Ferrari bosses to request the flag be put down as he embarked on his final trip around the circuit.

Harlow was spotted on camera playing with her hair and looking rather sheepish as she then just about produced the flag in time when Vettel actually did cross over the finish line.

WHEN THEY TELL YOU TO WAVE THE FLAG A LAP TOO EARLY! You had one job sir!!! Hahaha ?????? but so grateful everyone was safe today and no one got hurt for this! @f1 ???✨???

F1 chiefs were sweating when it was remembered that Sporting Regulation 43.2 states an early chequered flag means classification has to be taken from when it was flown.

But luckily for every driver on the field, as well as Harlow, there were no changes in positions between laps 69 and 70.

And for veteran Formula One fans, it brought back memories of Pele in 2002 when the football legend forgot to wave the chequered flag at all in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

However, Twitter users didn’t let Harlow off the hook, with one viewer brandishing her actions “embarrassing.”

Another wrote: “Winnie Harlow didn’t make a good case for changing the perception about models being dumb.”

But some believed the early flag was a good thing due to the “boring” nature of the race, with one writing: “Apparently we have Winnie Harlow to thank for putting us out of our misery.”

Another said: “To be fair Winnie Harlow did us all a favour. That race was boring.”

A final tweet read: “Good on Winnie Harlow for waving the flag a lap sooner than scheduled, you did us all a favour.”
